The time of Rody Kenny Courtice was circumscribed by artistic developments in Canada that meant, among other things, a certain style and identity for "Canadian art," for example, the manner of the Group of Seven. Many artists, particularly women, were left somewhat behind and insufficiently considered in modernism's rush forward; Rody Kenny Courtice being one of them. This exhibition examines Rody Kenny Courtice's contribution to Canadian art history. Courtice's work is often whimsical, yet the works are not lacking in quality as paintings. Where she particularly excelled was in ther depiction of animals. For much of her career, Courtice painted larger canvasses in her Markham studio, begun as studies inthe fields arough the property, while in winter the trend was towards smaller paintings that could be managed in her more confined quarters in Toronto. Throughout her artistic career Courtice was particularly active in society exhibitions, but also showed her work in solo, two-peron and group exhibitions. The independent-minded woman added an exemplary body of work to the canon of Canadian art history; her contributions are worth remembering.
